There is a new way to grow your favorite plants that does not require any dirt. Hydroponics is the practice of growing plants completely in water, without the hassle or mess of potting soil.
While it may sound very scientific, hydroponic gardening is surprisingly simple and one of the most rewarding ways to welcome new growth into your home. This method is also perfect for beginners ready to try their hand with houseplants and gardening!
All you need is:
A glass with water, a Claroplants, and a plant cutting to regrow
This guide works best for vining plants such as pothos, philodendrons, tradescantias, and monsteras. Not all plants can propagate via cuttings, so be sure to do your research before cutting your houseplant.
1. Grab some gardening shears and disinfect the blades. If you do not have any shears, then scissors or a knife can work in a pinch.
2. Locate a place to cut from your mother plant. Cuttings should have, at minimum, one leaf and one node in order to thrive. A node is a “line” across the stem where the roots will grow out. Cut the plant and find a glass jar full of water to place the new cutting in.
3. With your new cutting and jar of water, the Claroplants plate will bring everything together. Thread the cutting through the opening in the plate near the bottom of the cutting, with a few inches of stem hanging out. Adjust as needed. Place the cutting over the jar, making sure that a few centimeters of stem are submerged in water. The plate acts as a collar, suspending the cutting in place above the water.
4. Change the water every few days to prevent root rot.
5. Every cutting will grow roots at its own pace. Check in every few days to look for emerging roots. This can take a few days or a few weeks. Once the root system is full, you have the option to keep the plant in hydroponics or transfer to soil.
Propagating with hydroponics is a foolproof method to multiply your houseplants, and the perfect way for beginners to practice a new skillset. Try out one of the easiest and cheapest methods to regrow houseplants, with very minimal supplies needed upfront.
With Claroplants, propagation has never been more easy, fun and stylish!
